In-house operating system by Huawei
Harmony OS is a development software developed by Huawei Technologies. It’s the company's in-house OS created for use with its various smart devices, such as smart TVs, wearables, tablets, and smartphones. The OS has been in development since 2012 and it was officially released in 2019.
Similar to Android Pie or iOS 11, Harmony OS was developed for the Internet of Things(IoT) era when technology and its multiple manifestations have become an integral aspect of our daily lives. It aims to enter the industry and challenge the duopoly that is currently being held by tech giants, Apple and Google.
What is Harmony OS?
In a nutshell, Harmony OS is Huawei's take on a mobile operating system. It had very little fanfare when it started development back in 2012. It was not until news of Huawei's ban in the US that its existence suddenly came into relevance. The government sanction left the smartphone maker unable to use Google services for its devices that run Android, crippling their functionality and features.
This is where Harmony OS comes into play, hoping to address and fill in the void left by Google's OS and its services. Harmony OS 2.0, will ship with Huawei's various smart devices out of the box moving forward. Also, similar to Android, it will be an open-source platform that developers can create apps for, and manufacturers can adopt and use with its smart devices.
With Harmony OS 2.0, Huawei has a promising new platform that it can utilize across its various product line to be able to provide a seamless and unified user experience when devices start to ship later in 2021. Only time will tell how the company will plan to handle early adoption rates and elicit support from developers and manufacturers for its operating system.
The future seems bright
It's no secret that Huawei's banishment and disappearance from the US market have made an impact on its worldwide sales and reputation. With Harmony OS, the company is primed and ready to bounce back from this setback with a potentially more unified and better-implemented platform for all its devices. It's still in its early days, but the future seems bright for the company and the mobile tech industry in general.
